So you see, I’m coming at this from a very different starting point to most artists and therefore perhaps it should be no surprise that I am making new sales every month—just from my Facebook page.

I’m a huge advocate of sharing knowledge and want to offer a few key tips to you if you’re finding it tough to get some results from your own efforts on Facebook. Clearly this first article cannot dive into the more sophisticated elements of Facebook advertising, as it’s a big subject and goes several layers deep.

Budget go a long way. . . but I’m getting ahead of myself. Before you can start advertising, you need to have your own Facebook page. Let’s start with that:

If you’ve not already done this, Facebook will walk you through this process. The main thing is don’t attempt to skip things or miss these out. Like everything in life (including when we create art) you need to prepare correctly.

You’ll want a good Facebook Page Image, also called a masthead. This is the image that sits at the top of your page. It can be anything that fits the allowed dimension (and complies with Facebook’s rules) but don’t just add a photo or image. Use this space to also present a title and some extra information. Explain what you offer and who you are by overlaying some text on your photo. You can use a simple program like MS Paint to do this, or Photoshop if you’re a bit more IT savvy.

The same is true of your Page avatar (that’s the little square image that appears next to every post you share). Remember that this image is often viewed at very small scale, especially on smartphones, so don’t use an image that gets lost at small scale.

My advice is always to use a photo of yourself for your Page avatar. People like to see people, they respond well to faces and make sure your photo shows you looking at the camera (i.e. the viewer).

Also make sure to add a good biography and details in the relevant sections of your Page. Add contact details, a link to your main website, and generally complete everything you can, so that your Page information is correct and people can contact you.

Oh and one last point on this: yes, you need a Facebook Page, not just your own personal Facebook Profile. A Page has far more options and, in essence, represents a mini-website for your artwork. In fact, you could even market yourself online with only Facebook.

Don’t be bashful; tell all your friends and ask them to support you by “liking” your new Page. You’ll be surprised how supportive your friends, family and colleagues can be.

Ask for “shares” too—like anything in life, you just need to ask. So also ask your friends to help you by sharing your page with their circle of contacts. If you have only 100 friends on Facebook, but each one of them has 100 friends, the numbers will start to multiply rapidly. So go ahead, ask for help.

Also add some good images to your Page, especially if you’re just starting it. People want to see your artwork and you. Essentially the Internet is a visual medium and that’s really good news for artists, photographers, etc, because you have lots of images to share.

There are always a few that swim under the radar though, so let us know your favourite dive movies or underwater scenes in the comments below. “DeepStar Six has just discovered a new and deadly alien menace”. A pure 80’s testosterone classic. An underwater nuclear base, atmospheric diving suits and a creature from the deep that threatens it all!

“6 men with nothing to lose… but their lives” are plucked from prison to become deep sea divers. All manner of cheesy 80’s awesomeness will consume you for 92 minutes. Starring David Carradine and Billy Dee Williams, this is one of our favourite scuba diving movie cheese fests, and believe it or not, the premise is actually based on a real prisoner reform program.

Bing Crosby and Bob Hope star in this classic hardhat diving movie. Two all singing, all dancing men escape marriage by moving to an island where they fall in love with a Princess. As you do. You can’t talk about water related movies and not mention Jaws. Although the actual scuba content was pretty minimal, this movie forever changed the perception of sharks for many people. Several sequels faded from memory but did include scenes of scuba divers and large rubber sharks. One of the greatest motion pictures of all time.

Known for his crazy stunts, Tom Cruise looked to freediving instructor (and DIVER contributing Editor) Kirk Krack to prepare him for a tense underwater breathhold scene in the fifth installment of Mission Impossible. Cruise became a very competent freediver, achieving static breath holds of six minutes. While the finished scene was let down by unnecessary computer effects and cutaways, it was fun to see Ethan Hunt venture underwater.

A small independent movie that came out of nowhere to scare the shit out of potential scuba divers the world over. A holidaying couple in the Caribbean get left behind after a boat dive, sharks appear, tension rises, diving vacations take a tumble… One of the early adopters of the ‘found footage’ style of filmmaking made famous by the Blair Witch project. Definitely not for new divers, but worth checking out. Spawned two sequels.

A movie that done more to promote diving than anything in the past couple of decades, why? Jessica Alba’s butt and Paul Walkers abs. The young and beautiful cast, exotic locations, clear blue waters, and treasure hunt excitement made Into The Blue a surprisingly successful movie, and helped make diving look cool and sexy again. Kinda like a modern day version of The Deep. If you’re looking for a Saturday night popcorn flick, with some nicely shot underwater sequences, and yes, butts and abs, Into The Blue is our recommendation. It spawned a rather terrible sequel, with a different cast.

Deep sea treasure hunter Matthew McConaughey, rekindles his relationship with estranged wife Kate Hudson during a quest to find a Spanish ship full of treasure. Surprisingly charming and funny, with a good supporting cast. Not exactly good diving etiquette, but some exciting scenes and good family entertainment.

Perfect family entertainment, and it helps your kids improve their fish ID skills! Also spawned the sequel ‘Finding Dory’.

Michael Crichton’s novel adaptation, starring Samuel L Jackson, Dustin Hoffman and Sharon Stone as a crack team of scientists sent to investigate a 300 year old space shop 1, 000 feet underwater. The spaceship turns out to be an American craft presumably from the future, sent back through time after a mission through space gathering up large random objects, one of which is a liquid metal sphere. The book is way better, but Hoffman is always watchable, so worth a bucket of popcorn and a viewing.

Large, flying, bloodthirsty creatures await a group of cave divers trapped a mile underground in the world’s largest cave network (filmed in Romania). Modern day B-Movie madness, chock full of stereotypes, half dodgy effects and glorious over acting. We love it.
